Playa del Amor Zipolite: Mexico’s Most Iconic Gay Nude Beach (2026 Guide)

Andy & Trai at Playa del Amor in Zipolite
Hidden behind the rocks at the far eastern end of Zipolite, Playa del Amor — “Beach of Love” — is one of the most unforgettable gay nude beach experiences in the world.

What starts as a calm, mixed beach by day transforms into a fully social, clothing-optional sunset ritual that draws dozens — sometimes hundreds — of gay travelers every evening.

We’ve been coming to Zipolite for over five years, and this is the one place we never miss. If you’re planning a trip, here’s exactly what to expect.

Why Visit Playa del Amor?

Playa del Amor isn’t just a beach — it’s a daily experience that builds throughout the day and peaks at sunset.

By late afternoon, the entire cove begins to fill with a predominantly gay crowd. Drinks are flowing, music drifts through the air, and the energy shifts into something that feels equal parts social, freeing, and a little unpredictable.

It’s one of those rare places where meeting people feels effortless, and where the setting — golden light, warm water, and a tucked-away cove — makes everything feel a bit more magical.

Location: Where Is Playa del Amor?

Playa del Amor sits just beyond the rocky edge at the far eastern end of Playa Zipolite, the town’s main beach.

It’s slightly hidden from view, which adds to its appeal — you won’t stumble onto it accidentally, but it’s well known once you’re in town.

How to Get to Playa del Amor

Getting to Playa del Amor is part of the experience.

Head toward the eastern end of Zipolite beach until you reach Salmastro, one of the last beach bars before the staircase tucked behind them that leads up and over the rocks.

Expect about 100 uneven steps — it’s a bit of a rugged climb, but easily manageable for most travelers.

Once you make it over the hill, the cove opens up in front of you — and it’s worth every step.

🌟 Pro tip – Wear sandals or shoes with grip for the stairs.

What It’s Like During the Day

Earlier in the day, Playa del Amor feels calm, relaxed, and surprisingly low-key.

Chairs and umbrellas are set up in a semi-circle, and the crowd is mixed — gay couples, straight couples, solo travelers, locals, and nudists of all ages.

It’s peaceful, social, and welcoming without feeling overwhelming.

If you’re looking for a quiet nude beach moment in Zipolite, this is the best time to experience it.

The Sunset Experience (What Everyone Comes For)

By late afternoon, everything starts to change.

Guys begin arriving in groups, claiming chairs, ordering drinks, and settling in for sunset. The crowd becomes more predominantly gay, the energy builds, and the entire beach starts to feel more social.

As the sun drops:

  • Clothes gradually disappear
  • Drinks start flowing
  • People move between the water and their chairs
  • Conversations turn into connections

And then suddenly, you’re in the middle of one of the most iconic gay beach scenes in the world.

The best part?
Chairs are free — just order drinks from the bar.

Beach Bars & Drinks

There are two main palapas serving Playa del Amor:

  • Palapa Tony
  • Palapa Mary y Tino (our favorite)

The service here is incredible — and the team genuinely looks out for guests. We’ve personally seen staff jump into the water to help swimmers in trouble, which says a lot.

Drinks are affordable:

  • Beers start around 50 pesos (~$3 USD)
  • Cocktails and mezcalitas available
  • Card payments accepted (but bring cash as backup)

The menu has expanded a lot in recent years, making it easy to spend the entire afternoon here.

After Dark: What to Expect

As the sun sets, the beach takes on a completely different energy.

You’ll often catch a fire show at dusk, with performers lighting up the cove as the last light fades — definitely worth sticking around for.

After dark… things get a bit more adventurous.

We’ll leave the full details for Patreon, but just know that Playa del Amor doesn’t exactly end at sunset — it evolves.

Safety Tips (Important)

Zipolite isn’t called the “Beach of the Dead” for nothing.

The ocean here has strong rip currents, and conditions can change quickly.

Keep these in mind:

  • Always check conditions before swimming
  • Follow lifeguard instructions
  • Avoid swimming at night
  • Stay within your comfort level

The beach staff are attentive, but it’s always best to stay aware.

Best Time to Visit Playa del Amor

Timing makes a big difference here.

Best months:

  • January–February → calmest water + peak energy
  • December–April → best overall weather

What to know:

  • Late spring brings stronger waves (“mar profundo”)
  • Arrive at least 1 hour before sunset for the best spots

Where to Stay Nearby

If you want easy access to Playa del Amor, location matters.

We recommend Men Zipolite, a gay-owned, clothing-optional boutique hotel just about a 10-minute walk down the beach.

It’s social, stylish, and perfectly positioned for sunset visits and nightlife.

What to Do After Sunset

Once you leave Playa del Amor, the night continues.

The most popular next stop:

Chizme – Zipolite’s first gay bar, now nudity mandatory after 8pm.

It’s intimate, social, and one of the easiest places to keep the energy going.

Final Thoughts

Playa del Amor is one of those places that lives up to the hype — and then some.

It’s not just about the nudity or the setting — it’s about the feeling. The way the energy builds, the people you meet, and the freedom to just exist without expectations.

Come for the sunset.
Stay for what happens after.

And don’t be surprised if it becomes your favorite part of Zipolite.
