📍 Location: South Bacalar, lagoonfront near Los Rápidos
Why We Love It:
- Jungle-meets-lagoon setting
- Stunning design, immersive experience
- Exceptional lagoonfront restaurant and bar
- Travel Proud Certified (extra-welcoming for LGBTQ+ travelers)
There are hotels… and then there are experiences—and Our Habitas Bacalar is absolutely the latter. From the moment you arrive, you’re whisked away by golf cart through a lush jungle path, setting the tone for something truly special. It feels secluded, intentional, and completely removed from the outside world.
The property opens up to a breathtaking lagoonfront restaurant and pool area, where the water becomes the main attraction. The thatched-roof bungalows are tucked into nature, blending seamlessly with the surroundings while still offering modern comforts. It’s the kind of place where mornings start with coffee overlooking the lagoon and end with cocktails as the sky shifts colors at sunset.
What really stood out to us is how immersive the experience feels. Whether you're lounging by the water, dining at the restaurant, or simply walking through the property, everything is designed to connect you to Bacalar’s natural beauty. It’s easily one of the most unique stays we’ve experienced in Mexico—and perfect for an LGBTQ+ escape that feels both luxurious and grounded.
Things to Do
Bacalar is all about the water—and there’s one experience that stands above the rest.
Lagoon of Seven Colors Boat Tour
If you do one thing in Bacalar, make it this.
We booked this small-group pontoon boat tour, and it ended up being one of the most relaxing, scenic experiences we’ve had anywhere in Mexico. Over the course of three hours, you’ll visit hidden cenotes, float through the famous Pirates Channel, and swim in some of the clearest water you’ll ever see. Read our full review here.
After your time on the water, head into town to explore Bacalar’s historic center.
Start at the Fuerte de San Felipe de Bacalar, a 18th-century fort built to protect the town from pirates. Today, it offers incredible views over the lagoon and a small museum that adds context to Bacalar’s history.
Just outside, you’ll find the iconic Bacalar letters, perfect for a quick photo stop, along with a charming central square surrounded by shops, cafes, and local vendors. It’s a great place to wander, grab a drink, and experience the laid-back energy of the town.
Float at Los Rápidos & See Stromatolites Up Close
For something completely different, head just outside town to Los Rápidos Bacalar.
This is one of the most unique experiences in Bacalar—a natural lazy river with gentle currents, crystal-clear water, and ancient stromatolites lining the lagoon. You can float peacefully downstream, then loop back and do it all over again.
It’s also one of the best spots to spend a full afternoon. After your swim, grab a table at the on-site restaurant for fresh guacamole, fajitas, and drinks with a lagoon view. It’s relaxed, scenic, and easily one of our favorite places in Bacalar.
Where to Eat and Drink
Bacalar’s food scene is surprisingly strong, with everything from design-forward cafés to relaxed lagoonfront dining. Here are our top picks.
Breakfast: Chacà
A lush, modern café that’s perfect before a day on the lagoon.
Expect fresh juices, French press coffee, and beautifully plated dishes. Our go-to is the fruit and granola bowl paired with avocado toast—it’s light, fresh, and exactly what you want before heading out on the water.
Breakfast or Brunch: Our Habitas Bacalar
Even if you’re not staying here, the restaurant is worth a visit.
After a stunning jungle arrival by golf cart, you’re seated right on the lagoon. The menu mixes classic and elevated dishes—we loved the banana pancakes with mascarpone and the fresh juices. It’s easily one of the most beautiful breakfast settings in Bacalar.
Lagoonfront Lunch: La Playita
One of the most popular waterfront restaurants in town—and for good reason.
With a large menu and unbeatable views, it’s a great spot for a relaxed lunch. We recommend the mint cucumber cocktails and something light like the fajita pitas or guacamole while you take in the lagoon.
Dinner: Nixtamal Bacalar
Our top pick for dinner in Bacalar. A more elevated dining experience with a modern Mexican twist.
The atmosphere is stylish but relaxed, and the dishes are creative without feeling overdone. The Guacanixta (their signature guacamole) and cocktails were standouts for us.
When to Go
Bacalar is a year-round destination, but your experience will vary depending on the season.
High Season (December–April):
Sunny, dry weather and the busiest time to visit.
Low/Rainy Season (May–November):
Fewer crowds, lower prices, and occasional short rain showers—usually in the afternoon or evening.
We visited during rainy season and loved the peaceful vibe and lighter crowds.
Getting Here & Around
Getting to Bacalar takes a little more effort than your typical beach destination—but that’s exactly what keeps it feeling so special. Tucked away in southern Quintana Roo near the Belize border, Bacalar has managed to stay under the radar… for now.
The good news? It’s easier than ever to reach, especially with new airport options opening up in the region.
By Air
Most travelers arrive via one of two airports, depending on where you're coming from and how much flexibility you want during your trip:
- Chetumal International Airport (CTM) – This is the closest and most convenient option, located just 40 minutes from Bacalar. It’s a small regional airport with limited direct flights, but if you can find a route that works, it’s by far the easiest way to get here. From the airport, a quick taxi or transfer gets you straight to the lagoon.
- Tulum International Airport (TQO) – A newer and increasingly popular option, located about 2.5 to 3 hours north of Bacalar. We’ve flown into Tulum and love how modern and efficient the airport is—and the drive south is actually a really scenic introduction to this part of Mexico.
Getting Around
We recommend renting a car—it gives you the flexibility to explore places like Habitas and Los Rápidos at your own pace.
Frequently Asked Questions & Travel Tips
Is Bacalar LGBTQ+ friendly?
Yes—very. While Bacalar doesn’t have a defined “gay scene” like Puerto Vallarta, we found it to be incredibly welcoming, relaxed, and inclusive.
It attracts a mix of eco-travelers, couples, and creatives, and the vibe is more about connection, nature, and slowing down than labels. We felt completely comfortable being ourselves throughout our stay.
When is the best time to visit Bacalar?
December through April offers the best weather with sunny days, lower humidity, and minimal rain.
That said, we actually love May through November (rainy season) for fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more peaceful vibe. Showers are usually short and pass quickly—often in the late afternoon or overnight—so they rarely disrupt your plans.
How long should you stay in Bacalar?
We recommend 2–4 days.
Bacalar isn’t about packing your itinerary—it’s about slowing down, enjoying the lagoon, and letting the days unfold naturally. A couple of days gives you time for a boat tour, great meals, and plenty of relaxation.
Do I need to know Spanish?
Basic Spanish is helpful, but not essential.
Many people working in hotels, restaurants, and tours speak enough English to get by. That said, we always recommend downloading Google Translate—especially the camera feature, which lets you instantly scan menus and signs. Total game-changer.
Is Bacalar safe for LGBTQ+ travelers?
Yes. Bacalar felt very safe and easygoing during our stay.
Like anywhere, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, but overall the town has a calm, low-key atmosphere and a welcoming community. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a more relaxed, nature-focused LGBTQ+ getaway in Mexico.
Final Thoughts
Bacalar feels like a destination on the edge of discovery.
It has the beauty of places like Tulum or the Maldives—but with fewer crowds, better prices, and a much more relaxed energy. Whether you're here for the lagoon, the food, or simply to unwind, it’s a place that leaves a lasting impression.
If you're looking for a peaceful, LGBTQ+ friendly escape with incredible natural beauty, Bacalar should absolutely be on your list.
