Marshall’s Beach: San Francisco’s Most Iconic Gay Nude Beach (2026)

Andy at Marshall's Beach overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge
Dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and the Golden Gate Bridge towering overhead—Marshall’s Beach is hands-down San Francisco’s most iconic gay nude beach. Tucked just north of Baker Beach, this narrow strip of sand feels wonderfully hidden, deeply scenic, and unmistakably gay.

Marshall’s is also personal for us. It’s one of the places we came early on when we first met in San Francisco—back when Andy was a streetcar driver on the historic F-Line and our dates often involved wandering the city, riding vintage transit, and ending the day somewhere special by the water. Every visit brings a rush of nostalgia, which makes this beach a must whenever we’re back in SF.

What Makes Marshall’s Beach So Special?

Marshall’s Beach hits that rare sweet spot between raw nature and queer freedom.

Compared to nearby Baker Beach, Marshall’s is:

  • Smaller and more tucked away
  • Far less crowded
  • Predominantly gay men
  • More relaxed—and yes, more cruisy as you move north toward the bridge

The beach stretches less than a third of a mile, framed by massive boulders and cliffs that create semi-hidden coves (what we affectionately call “executive suites”). The views are unreal: the Golden Gate Bridge overhead, Marin Headlands across the water, and sea fog rolling in like a live postcard.

This is a place to slow down, strip down, and just be.

How to Get to Marshall's Beach

Getting to Marshall’s takes a little effort—which is exactly why it stays so special.

Transit + Walk

  • You can combine public transit with a scenic hike
  • Get off near Baker Beach or the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Follow the Batteries to Bluffs Trail down to the beach

Ride-share

  • Uber or Lyft to the trailhead is the easiest option
  • From there, it’s about a 20-minute hike down

As you descend, the views open up dramatically, and by the time you hit the sand, you’ll feel a world away from the city.

🌟 Pro tip – Wear real shoes. The trail is steep and rocky—flip-flops will betray you.

How to Find the Gay Section

While both Baker Beach and Marshall’s are clothing-optional, Marshall’s is where the gay crowd is.

  • Head toward the northern end, closer to the bridge
  • Look for clusters of men near and around the rocks
  • Some sections require climbing over boulders to access—worth it

The further north you go, the more private it feels. This is where you’ll find the most nudity, socializing, and discreet exploration tucked behind rocks and coves.

Marshall’s vs. Baker Beach

These two beaches are often mentioned together, but the vibe is very different:

Baker Beach

  • Easier access and parking
  • Facilities and restrooms
  • Bigger crowds, families, tourists
  • Clothing-optional only on the far northern end

Marshall’s Beach

  • Harder to reach (by design)
  • No services at all
  • Mostly gay men
  • More secluded and intimate
  • Better Golden Gate Bridge views

If you want energy and convenience, Baker Beach works.
If you want privacy, scenery, and gay-only vibes—Marshall’s wins every time.

Amenities

There are zero services ("ahem") at Marshall’s Beach.

Pack accordingly:

  • Plenty of water
  • Sunscreen (fog doesn’t block UV!)
  • Towel or blanket
  • Snacks
  • Hat or umbrella for shade
  • A light jacket for later

🌟 Pro tip – Even on sunny days, it can get cold fast once the wind and fog roll in.

When to Go

Marshall’s Beach is best in fall:

  • Best months: September – November
  • Quietest: Weekdays
  • Most social: Sunny weekends and afternoons

Late afternoon can be magical—but chilly—so plan layers if you’re staying through sunset.
