Black’s Beach: San Diego’s Legendary Gay Nude Beach (2026)
For us, Black’s Beach perfectly balances California nature with unfiltered gay energy. It’s big, bold, scenic, and unapologetically what it is—which is exactly why it belongs on every gay beach bucket list.
What Makes Black's Beach So Special?
Black’s Beach is legendary for a reason.
Compared to smaller or harder-to-access gay nude beaches, Black’s offers:
- One of the longest nude beaches in the U.S.
- Dramatic cliffs and wide-open space
- A clearly defined gay section
- An atmosphere that ranges from relaxed sunbathing to confidently social
Because the beach sits below steep cliffs, it feels remote and hidden despite being close to the city. Add in near-constant sunshine and powerful Pacific surf, and you’ve got a beach that feels larger than life.

How to Get to Black’s Beach
Getting to Black’s Beach is an adventure—and a bit of a workout.
By Car or Ride-Share (Recommended)
- From Hillcrest (the gayborhood), Uber or Lyft is the easiest option
- Ask to be dropped at the north end of the car park
- From there, follow the trail down to the beach
Important: The trail is steep and sandy. Wear real shoes—not flip-flops. Even the walk down has a playful, social energy on busy days.
Public Transit Option
- Take the Blue Line Trolley north toward UC San Diego (great option if staying in Gaslamp)
- From stops near campus, it’s about a 30-minute walk to the trailhead
We Ubered in for a smooth arrival, then walked back through UC San Diego afterward to catch the trolley—ending the day perfectly with happy hour in Little Italy.
How to Find the Gay Section
Black’s Beach is huge—but the gay nude section is easy to find.
- Head north from the main access path
- Follow the clusters of nude sunbathers
- The gay area typically sits farther from the main entrances and families
The vibe is unmistakable: confident, social, and very San Diego. With UC San Diego nearby, you’ll often see a younger, energetic crowd mixing with longtime regulars—everyone enjoying the same freedom in their own way.
What's the Vibe?
Black’s Beach feels different depending on where you are:
- Near the main paths: more mixed and laid-back
- Further north: overwhelmingly gay, nude, and social
- Behind the dunes and cliffs: quieter, more private
Despite its reputation, the overall energy remains relaxed and respectful. Some come to tan for hours, others to walk, explore, and socialize. There’s space for everyone.
Amenities
There are no services at Black’s Beach.

- Snacks
- A hat or umbrella if you burn easily
When to Go
Black’s Beach is usable year-round, but timing matters.
- Best season: April – October
- Peak energy: Summer weekends
- More relaxed: Weekdays and mornings
Afternoons tend to be the most social, while mornings are quieter and cooler.
Where to Stay in San Diego
The Granger Hotel — Best for Design Lovers & Seamless Transit
⭐ Best for: Stylish city stays, easy transit & LGBTQ+ friendly hospitality
📍 Location: Gaslamp Quarter in Downtown San Diego
Why We Love It:
- Member of Design Hotels with a polished, modern aesthetic
- Part of Marriott’s LGBTQ+ friendly portfolio
- Steps to the Blue Line Trolley for a car-free run to Black’s Beach
- Walkable downtown location near dining, nightlife, and the waterfront
- Super convenient for rail travel north via San Diego Santa Fe Depot
Staying downtown makes beach days effortless—and The Granger Hotel hits the sweet spot between design, comfort, and connectivity. From here, you can hop on the Blue Line Trolley up to UC San Diego and walk down to Black’s Beach, then be back in the Gaslamp for dinner without ever needing a car.
It’s also ideal if you’re extending your trip along the coast. Santa Fe Depot (Union Station) is close by, making it easy to continue north on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner—which we covered in our California Amtrak Pacific Surfliner experience from San Diego to Los Angeles video. Beach by day, coastal rail by tomorrow—this base makes it all flow.
Final Thoughts
Black’s Beach is iconic, expansive, and unforgettable. It’s the kind of place that lives up to the hype—dramatic cliffs, endless sand, and a distinctly gay energy that feels confident rather than chaotic.
Whether you Uber in and relax all afternoon or turn it into a full adventure with transit, walking, and post-beach drinks, Black’s Beach delivers a true California gay nude beach experience.
