Thompson Washington DC Hotel Review: Stylish Stay in Navy Yard (2025)
Location: Anchored in the Heart of Navy Yard
If you want to explore the District without constantly calling rideshares, Thompson Washington DC is perfectly situated. Located in the hip Navy Yard neighborhood, the hotel is steps from the scenic Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, Nationals Park, and a growing list of buzz-worthy bars, breweries, cafés, and restaurants.
Love public transport? You're in luck—the Green Line Metro is just a few blocks away, connecting you to DC’s top LGBTQ+ neighborhoods like U Street, Shaw, Dupont Circle, and Logan Circle in minutes. You’ll also find Capital Bikeshare stations right across the street, and Tingey Plaza offers green space and great people-watching just steps from the lobby.
Facilities: Clean Design, Elevated Vibe
From the moment you enter the lobby, Thompson Washington DC makes a great first impression. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with light, and the aesthetic blends industrial elements with refined nautical accents. It’s sleek without being sterile, and cozy enough for both work and lounging.
There’s a long communal table with tons of outlets for coworking or catching up on emails, as well as a tucked-away Thompson Bar Room that feels part speakeasy, part study nook.
The bell staff and valet are friendly and efficient, elevators are super fast, and there's even direct elevator access to a well-equipped basement gym featuring Peloton bikes, treadmills, TRX straps, and a solid range of free weights.
Rooms: Boutique Luxury with Nautical Charm
We stayed in a Standard King Room, and it’s everything we love about the Thompson brand: modern design, thoughtful details, and boutique luxury with local flair.
Expect rich navy tones, leather accents, ambient lighting, and enough space to actually unpack and unwind. You’ll find a luggage rack, robes and slippers, iron and steamer, plus reading lights and USB outlets on both sides of the bed (though we’d love to see USB-C soon, Hyatt).
There’s a full-length mirror—essential—and a well-lit desk area with extra outlets if you’re working on the go.
The bathroom is a standout: beautiful tilework, great lighting, generous counter space, and a spacious walk-in shower with a built-in shaving mirror. We also loved the luxe D.S. & Durga toiletries and that the water control is outside the stream—no cold splash surprises here!
Food & Drink: Local Gems Just Steps Away
While the on-site restaurant, Surveyor, offers all-day dining, we skipped it based on mixed reviews and opted to explore the neighborhood’s culinary scene.
Before you head out, don’t miss the rooftop bar, open daily from 5 PM with happy hour until 7 PM. While drinks can get pricey—$25 for a Negroni!—happy hour offers solid savings, and the panoramic views over the river, city skyline, and incoming Reagan Airport flights make it totally worth it.
For dinner, Osteria Morini is just a short riverside stroll away and absolutely delivered. The vibe is cozy and upscale with excellent service, an impressive wine list, and standout handmade pastas—especially on Monday nights when they’re just $15.
For breakfast, we walked across the street to Maman, a charming Parisian-style café with buttery pastries, artisan coffee, and breakfast bowls. As hotel guests, we scored 10% off—one of several perks included in the daily destination fee.
Overall Experience: Modern Luxury Meets Local Cool
We loved our stay at Thompson Washington DC. From the nautical design and friendly staff to the neighborhood’s walkability and river views, this property checks all the right boxes for a luxury city escape.
At $179 per night in shoulder season (plus a $30 destination fee), it offers great value—especially when you factor in Capital Bikeshare credits, local discounts, and the option to request a Nespresso machine for your room.
Yes, there were a few misses (hello, budget toilet paper and no CNBC on the TV), but nothing that detracted from the overall experience. And as Hyatt loyalists, we appreciated the ability to book a free night using just 15,000 World of Hyatt points.
