Cancun International Airport – What You NEED to Know in 2025! (Step-by-Step Guide)

Cancun International Airport (airport code: CUN) is Mexico’s second-busiest airport and the main gateway to the Riviera Maya, welcoming millions of travelers each year. Whether you're heading to Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Cancun’s famous all-inclusive resorts, navigating this bustling airport can feel overwhelming—especially with long lines, aggressive timeshare reps, and confusing transport options.

In this ultimate Cancun Airport survival guide for 2025, we’ll walk you through what to expect from arrival to departure, plus insider tips to save you time, money, and stress. From clearing immigration and customs to choosing the best airport transportation, we’ve got you covered!

Let’s dive in! 👇

Overview of Cancun International Airport (CUN)

Cancun International Airport is the only airport in Mexico with four terminals:

  • Terminal 1 – Private flights (non-commercial)
  • Terminal 2 – Domestic flights & some international (mostly Latin America)
  • Terminal 3 – The busiest terminal for U.S., Canadian, and European flights
  • Terminal 4 – Another major terminal for international airlines

Most American Airlines, Delta, United, and British Airways flights land at Terminal 3, while Aeromexico, Southwest, JetBlue, and WestJet typically arrive at Terminal 4. Always check your airline’s terminal before flying!

No matter which terminal you arrive at, the arrival and departure process is the same, so this step-by-step guide applies across the board.

Passport Control at Terminal 3
Passport Control at Terminal 3

Step 1: Passport Control

After deplaning, follow the clearly marked signs for Passport Control and Baggage Claim—in both English and Spanish. Next, take the escalator or stairs down to passport control, where you’ll see three options:

  • E-Gates (Automated Border Control) – Not currently in use as of our February 2025 trip.
  • Mexican Nationals Line – Only for Mexican citizens now. If you’re a permanent resident like us, you must use the third option.
  • Foreigners Line – If you’re a tourist, this is where you’ll go.

When it's your turn for processing, here's what you'll need:

  • Passport – required
  • Boarding pass – they always ask us
  • Lodging details – sometimes asked
  • Number of days you’ll stay – they might ask

🌟 Pro tip – No more FMM (Tourist Card)! You no longer need to fill out this form when arriving in Cancun. However, if your airline still gives you one onboard, fill it out anyway—other airports in Mexico may still require it.

Baggage Claim & Customs at Terminal 3
Baggage Claim & Customs at Terminal 3

Step 2: Baggage Claim & Customs

Once you clear immigration, head to Baggage Claim to collect any checked luggage and then proceed through Customs. If you have nothing to declare, take the green lane. If you need to declare anything, go to the red lane. You might be randomly selected for an extra screening, but it’s usually quick.

🌟 Pro tip – Traveling with a pet? This is also where you’ll declare them before exiting. You'll see a sign for SENASICA on the left at Customs (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad Calidad Agroalimentaria) is the Mexican agency that inspects animals entering the country.

ATMs in Car Rental Hall at Terminal 3
ATMs in Car Rental Hall at Terminal 3

Step 3: Car Rental Hall & ATMs

After customs, you’ll enter the car rental hall, lined with desks from international car rental companies. If you plan to explore the Mayan ruins and cenotes dotting the Yucatán Peninsula, definitely rent a car.

🌟 Pro tip – We use Discover Cars to compare prices from top providers and score incredible discounts. Their inexpensive full coverage option gives us peace of mind (you must add liability insurance at a minimum in Mexico), and free cancellations up to 48-hours before pickup ensure flexibility when plans change.

The car rental hall is also where you’ll find ATMs if you need pesos. Quick tip—always accept the ATM fee but decline the conversion! This trick saves you from inflated exchange rates that can cost you 5–10% more.

Also, when making purchases, always pay in pesos—not USD. Airport vendors often offer terrible conversion rates. We use a travel credit card with no foreign transaction fees, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, to always get the best exchange rate.

Step 4: The Timeshare Gauntlet

After the ATMs and car rental desks, you’ll enter what we call the Timeshare Gauntlet—where aggressive sales reps try to lure you in with offers of free rides, discounted tours, or resort credits. Our advice? Keep walking! Look straight ahead, say "No gracias," and don’t stop until you’re outside.

Step 5: Outside Arrivals – Transportation Options

Once you step outside, you’ll find several transportation options. Taxi vendors and private car services will be everywhere, and you’ll see drivers holding signs with guest names. The scene can feel a little chaotic and overwhelming at first. If you're meeting someone, each terminal has a Welcome Bar or Air Margaritaville, which are great meeting spots.

Now, let's discuss your transportation options and what you'll see:

  • Private Transfer (Best for Comfort & Safety) – The most comfortable and hassle-free option. Pre-book a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation (who we use) and an English-speaking driver will meet you at the airport with a sign, provide bottled water, and take you directly to your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. This is our go-to method, especially when traveling with our rescue pup.
  • ADO Bus (Best Budget Option) – The cheapest option to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. Look for the red ADO kiosk upon arrival. If you land at Terminal 3 (where most international flights arrive), note that the bus typically stops at Terminals 2 and then 4 before heading onwards, adding about 30 minutes to your journey.
  • Rental Car (Best for Explorers) – Major rental companies have shuttles outside the terminals. Reserve in advance for the best rates!
  • Taxi (Not Recommended!) – Taxis from Cancun Airport are overpriced and often cash-only. Always negotiate your fare before getting in or book a private transfer instead. This is our least recommended option due to aggressive tactics.

🌟 Pro tip – Uber is not allowed at Cancun Airport, and service in Cancun is limited and unreliable. To avoid stress, we highly recommend pre-booking your transfer for a smooth start to your trip.

International Departures

Now that you know what to expect when arriving in Cancun, let’s talk about departures! One of the most common questions we get is: “How early should I arrive at the airport?" If it’s your first time or you need to check bags, we recommend arriving at least three hours before your flight. Traffic around the airport can be unpredictable, especially with road construction!

Once inside, you’ll find airline check-in counters and self-service kiosks. You’ll also find a few shops and eateries on the way to security. If you have Priority Pass, there’s a great lounge before security (Terminal 3) where we love to relax with a drink and tacos before our flight. Lounge access is even better in Terminals 2 and 4, as both offer a Priority Pass lounge after security.

🌟 Pro tip – If you’re a Mexican resident, don’t forget to check out at the INM office before heading to security. Tourists can go straight up the escalator with their boarding pass, including mobile passes.

After security, you’ll enter the terminal with duty-free shops and a variety of restaurants, both fast-service and sit-down. Our favorite is to grab a fresh made-to-order pizza for the flight at The Marketplace by Wolfgang Puck.

One thing to note about departing from Cancun—there’s no passport control on exit. Unlike in Europe, you won’t get an exit stamp. You just go through security, wait for your flight, and board your plane.

It’s pet-friendly, has a beautiful pool, a great gym, and an on-site restaurant with affordable nightly specials. Some rooms have airport views, perfect for plane spotting!

Yes, but the exchange rate is terrible! Always pay in pesos for better value.

Short Answer: No! Introduced in 2021, this tax applies to international tourists, but no one checks or enforces it. Some airlines may email you about it, but you don't actually need to pay it. If this ever changes, you can pay it online using the airport’s free Wi-Fi.
