Things to Do

Brussels is full of iconic sights and unique experiences that cater to the savvy gay traveler. Here are our must-see experiences:

Magritte Museum – Dive into the surreal world of René Magritte, one of Belgium's most celebrated artists. The Magritte Museum houses an extensive collection of his masterpieces, including The Treachery of Images and The Return. Beyond the artwork, the museum provides a captivating look into Magritte's life, offering a deeper understanding of his unique philosophy and creative process.

La Grand Place– Often hailed as one of the most beautiful squares in the world, La Grand Place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the beating heart of Brussels. Surrounded by ornate Baroque and Gothic guildhalls, as well as the towering City Hall and Maison du Roi ("King's House"), the square is a masterpiece of architectural splendor that showcases the city’s rich history and culture.

During the Winter Wonders and Christmas Markets, the square transforms with an incredible sound and light show, adding a magical touch to the holiday season. Every other summer, it becomes even more breathtaking with the installation of a massive flower carpet, a stunning display of over half a million blooms. Mark your calendars—the next one takes place in August 2026!

Manneken Pis – This quirky statue of a little boy peeing into a fountain has become a symbol of Brussels' playful and irreverent spirit, making it a must-see and a fun photo op. Over the years, numerous legends have added to its charm, the most famous being the tale of a brave boy who saved the city by extinguishing a fire with his well-timed "aim."

Manneken Pis also boasts a wardrobe of over 1,000 costumes, gifted from around the world, and he’s regularly dressed up for special occasions—a tradition that keeps locals and visitors guessing what he’ll wear next. Just a short stroll from the Grand Place, you can also find his “sister,” Jeanneke Pis, a lesser-known but equally curious statue of a little girl urinating—a playful counterpart to the city’s beloved icon.

We savored classic Negronis alongside a traditional margherita pizza that was perfectly balanced and packed with flavor, followed by an excellent tiramisu for dessert. With its popularity, reservations are highly recommended as many hopeful walk-ins are often turned away.

Best Gay Bars & Clubs

While not an exhaustive list, Brussels’ gay nightlife scene is surprisingly under the radar, with the legendary La Demence being the notable exception. In the Saint-Jacques gay district, the variety of experiences is impressive for such a compact area. Along Rue du Marché au Charbon, also known as the gay street, you can hop between a bear-friendly bar, a nudist spot, and everything in between. Here are our favorites:

Station BXL – The quintessential neighborhood gay bar, offering a laid-back vibe with affordable drinks and a welcoming mix of locals and international visitors. Widely regarded as the best gay bar in Brussels, you'll find lively crowds here even on weeknights along with stunning decorations, fun drink specials, and exceptionally friendly service.

Happy Hour at Station BXL

Happy hour here is a must, but be prepared—it gets packed fast, so arriving early is your best bet for snagging a seat. In summer, the crowd spills into the street, mingling with patrons from neighboring gay bars like Le Baroque, Dolores, and Le Belgica. Despite the competition, Station BXL consistently stands out for its unbeatable atmosphere. If you have time for just one gay bar in Brussels, this is the place to go.

Stamm Bar – A go-to spot for the leather and fetish crowd, Stamm Bar has a relaxed yet edgy vibe. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, it's a great place to grab a drink, meet new people, and explore its back play area for those feeling adventurous. Don't miss their naked underwear nights which are a lot of fun.

La Demence – The crown jewel of Brussels’ gay nightlife, La Demence is a monthly event that draws crowds from all over the world. Expect multiple dance floors, top DJs, and an electric atmosphere. It’s an experience every gay traveler should have at least once. Head over to our Patreon for our full review and helpful tips to make your first time unforgettable.

When to Go

Brussels is a year-round destination, but the best times to visit are spring (April–June) and fall (September–November) when the weather is mild, and the city is alive with events. Key LGBTQ+ events include:

Brussels Pride (May) – A colorful celebration of love and diversity, Brussels Pride in the capital of Europe is a fabulous event that draws thousands of attendees each May. The festivities include a spectacular parade through the city’s streets, music, and performances that showcase the LGBTQ+ community's creativity and spirit. Beyond the parade, the Pride Village in the city center offers live entertainment, food trucks, and plenty of opportunities to connect with locals and visitors alike.

La Demence Anniversary Weekend (October/November) – A multi-day extravaganza celebrating one of Europe’s most famous gay events. The anniversary party takes the energy to the next level. Held in a massive indoor arena instead of Fuse, this legendary event attracts nearly 10,000 shirtless, sweaty men from all over the world, dancing the night away under incredible lights and beats. With its epic scale and electric atmosphere, it’s truly a bucket-list experience for any party enthusiast.

Winter Wonders and Christmas Markets (December) – Immerse yourself in holiday magic with Brussels’ enchanting Christmas markets, offering everything from mulled wine to handmade gifts. After exploring the stalls, our favorite place to warm up by the fire is the glamorous Champagne Bar.

How to Get Here

Getting to Brussels is easy, whether you’re flying in or taking the train:

By Air – Fly into Brussels Airport (airport code: BRU), which is well-connected to major cities worldwide. From the airport, it’s a quick train ride to the city center. We also strongly recommend arriving 3+ hours before departure, as the e-gates for immigration departures are sometimes down, requiring everyone to go through the manual exit process for all passports. We spent over an hour and a half in line after a speedy security screening and would have missed our flight to London if it weren't delayed!

By Train – High-speed services like Eurostar (Thalys) make Brussels easily accessible from cities like Paris, London, and Amsterdam.

🌟 Pro tip – To find the cheapest train tickets to Brussels or anywhere in Europe for that matter, book as soon as tickets become available. Train companies often release cheaper fares first and prices increase closer to departure date.
