Praia 19 Lisbon: Portugal's Best Gay Nude Beach (2026)

Andy at Praia 19 Gay Beach
Miles of golden sand, dramatic dunes, and one of the most welcoming gay crowds in Europe — Praia 19 is Lisbon’s most iconic gay nude beach and an absolute must if you’re visiting in summer. Often described as the largest gay nude beach in Europe, it delivers space, freedom, and an effortlessly social vibe that keeps people coming back year after year.

Located south of Lisbon along the Caparica coast, Praia 19 feels wild and expansive, yet surprisingly easy to reach for a perfect beach day or sunset hangout.

Below is your complete guide to Praia 19 — how to get there, where the gay section is, what the vibe is really like, where to eat afterward, when to go, and where to stay in Lisbon.

What Makes Praia 19 So Special?

Praia 19 isn’t just another clothing-optional beach — it’s legendary.

What sets it apart:

  • Massive size: Miles of sand with room to spread out
  • Unapologetically gay: Predominantly male, nude, and social
  • Natural setting: Rolling dunes, wild landscapes, and ocean views
  • Easy day trip: Just 30–35 minutes from Lisbon

The atmosphere reminds us of other world-class gay nude beaches like Zandvoort (Amsterdam) and Sandy Bay (Cape Town) — social, relaxed, and sexy without being aggressive. Whether you’re here to tan, swim, chat, or wander the dunes, it feels natural and welcoming.

How to Get to Praia 19

Praia 19 is located about 24 km south of central Lisbon, near Fonte da Telha.

By Uber or Taxi (Best Option)

From Bairro Alto or central Lisbon, expect:

  • 30–35 minutes travel time
  • €15–€18 each way (we paid under €17 for a Mercedes E-Class Uber)

🌟 Pro tip – Drop your pin slightly north of Fonte da Telha, past the last beach cafés. This shortens your walk to the gay section.

By Public Transport

It is possible, but slow and inconvenient — involving multiple buses and longer walks through sand. If you’re carrying beach gear, rideshare is 100% worth it.

How to Find the Gay Section

Praia 19 is vast, but the gay section is easy once you know where to go.

From Fonte da Telha:

  1. 1. Walk north along the beach for about 15 minutes
  2. 2. Look for clusters of guys near the dunes
  3. 3. Continue toward the sand tracks and overgrown railway remnants

Praia 19 is named after the old train line marker “19” — you’ll still see the abandoned tracks behind the dunes.

What's the Vibe?

Praia 19 has one of the best-balanced vibes of any gay nude beach we’ve visited.

Expect:

  • Mostly nude, mostly gay crowd
  • Friendly, welcoming energy
  • Social groups near the water
  • Quieter, more private setups in the dunes

Behind the dunes, you’ll also find a network of trails for more discreet exploration — similar to Zandvoort or Sandy Bay. It’s easy to choose your own comfort level here.

As the afternoon turns into evening, the beach becomes especially magical — groups sharing wine, laughter floating through the dunes, and kite surfers cutting across the horizon.

Food & Drink Nearby

Praia 19 itself has no services, but Fonte da Telha is just a short walk back.

After our beach day, we love stopping at Grão d’Areia, a relaxed beachfront café perfect for:

  • Cold limonadas
  • Fries and snacks
  • Casual meals with sunset views

Bring water and snacks to the beach, then reward yourself afterward.

When to Go

Praia 19 is best from late spring to early autumn.

  • Peak season: June-August
    • Busiest on weekends (especially Sundays)
  • Sweet spot: May & September
    • Warm weather, fewer crowds, perfect balance
  • Weekdays: More relaxed, still social

Summer evenings here are unmatched.
