Top 10 Things To Do in Mexico City

  • Don't miss the Frida Kahlo Museum -
Also known as Casa Azul or the Blue House, the museum was the home of this most famous Mexican artist and her husband Diego Rivera until her death in 1954. Since then, her work has been rediscovered. Do yourself a favor and book a guided tour to skip the line which can be quite long even with timed tickets.
  • Stand in awe outside The Palace of Fine Arts -
This Art Nouveau and Neoclassical building has been called the “Cathedral of Art” in Mexico. It's also unbelievably beautiful. On the inside, the Art Deco interior provides a historical backdrop for the well known murals by Diego Rivera. For a truly breathtaking view, head across the street to the coffee shop at the top of Sears.
  • Step back in time in the Zócalo -
The main square in the historic center offers an iconic Mexico City experience. Here you'll find the stunning Metropolitan Cathedral, which took 250 years to complete, and the National Palace, home to Mexico's President. The square was also used in the thrilling opening scene of Spectre, the 2015 James Bond movie.
  • Discover the futuristic Soumaya Museum -
With 16,000 hexagonal aluminum tiles covering the museum and a staggering personal collection of over 66,000 pieces of art, the Soumaya Museum wows visitors both inside and out. It's also completely free courtesy of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. Our favorites include sculptures by Rodin, Degas, and Dalí.
  • Head to Polanco -
Make your way over tothe glam Polanco neighborhood for upscale shopping, dining, and entertainment. Near the Parque Lincoln you will find some of the trendiest cafes with the best people watching in Mexico City. After lunch, window shop along the famous Avenida Presidente Masaryk with luxury boutiques like Cartier and Louis Vuitton.
  • Float over the pyramids at Teotihuacán -
Enjoy a hot air balloon ride over the archaeological site of this once thriving sixth-largest city in the world. After an early morning pickup at your hotel or Airbnb, you’ll arrive in plenty of time to watch sunrise as you glide over colorful homes toward the Pyramid of the Sun. Book with Viator or book with Get Your Guide.
  • Visit The National Museum of Anthropology -
Learn about Mexico's history and culture at  the largest and most visited museum in Mexico. On entry, you will find a massive square umbrella with a waterfall supported by just a single pillar. Of the many halls surrounding the courtyard, we recommend the Mexica and Teotihuacán exhibits at a minimum.
  • Stroll Chapultepec Park -
As one of the largest and most visited urban parks in the world, Chapultepec Park receives an estimated 15 million visitors per year and for good reason. The expansive park offers a wide variety of activities from paddle boats to museums. For a guided small group tour, which includes the Anthropology Museum and Castle, book here.
  • See The Angel of Independance -
El Ángel, or The Angel of Independence, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Mexico City. Located on the busy Paseo de la Reforma, this victory column commemorates Mexico’s War of Independence from Spain. It's also where the annual Gay Pride Parade begins the last Saturday in June.
  • Explore Roma Condesa -
Take a walk around the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods to find impressive statues, modern architecture, gorgeous tree-lined streets, and plenty of street art. It's by far our favorite place to stay when visiting Mexico City. You'll also find some of the city's best restaurants and sidewalk cafes here.

Travel Insurance – Don’t forget to add global travel medical insurance that covers you while traveling outside of your home country. We recommend Safety Wing. You can buy it even if you are already abroad. Most health coverage in the U.S. for example does not cover you in Mexico, thus it’s extremely important to protect yourself from out of pocket costs due to a medical emergency. We learned this the hard way which you can watch here. To learn more about Safety Wing, click here.

Car Rental – Should your travel plans call for hiring a car, we use rentalcars.com to search the best prices among the major car rental companies. With flexible rentals, no hidden fees, and price match guarantee, we feel confident booking with them. Just make sure to book with your Chase Sapphire Reserve for extra protection.

Hi! We're Two Gay Expats

Hi gorgeous, and welcome to our LGBTQ+ travel blog! We're Andy and Trai, a gay couple traveling the world with PRIDE 🌈  …and our rescue dog, Pattie!

After meeting in San Francisco in 2018 and later moving to Chicago, we decided to quit our jobs in 2021, sell everything, and become Two Gay Expats. For over two years, we explored the best of gay Mexico while waiting for our house, Casa Cangrejo, to be completed in Tulum. We got married at The Beach Tulum in 2020 and became Mexican permanent residents in 2022.

Today, we continue to travel around Mexico and the world to show you our favorite places. If you'd like to follow our adventures, subscribe on YouTube and join us on Instagram.
