Gay Frankfurt – Your Complete LGBTQ+ Travel Guide in 2024
Overview – Frankfurt is so much more than the largest financial hub in continental Europe. It has an impressive museum scene filled with homoerotic art, a romantic love bridge with unparalleled views of they city's skyline, and friendly gay nightlife. With one of the world’s busiest airports, many queer travelers find themselves in Frankfurt at some point, so we put together this gay travel guide to help you plan a fabulous 1 or 2-day stopover in this underrated and worthwhile LGBTQ+ destination.
Things to do – First, its super easy to explore Frankfurt by foot or with the city's frequent trams. If you purchase the Frankfurt Card, which comes with 1 or 2-day options, you can use unlimited public transit (including the train to the airport) in addition to huge discounts at numerous museums and attractions.
Where to stay - In terms of the best gay-friendly hotels in Frankfurt, we only found one who proudly flies the gay flag all year long. Le Meridien Frankfurt is without a doubt an excellent choice for the LGBTQ+ traveler. Location-wise, the hotel is a short walk from Frankfurt Central Station, the Main River, and Museum Embankment.
In terms of amenities, the hotel offers a light filled restaurant with comfortable seating as well as a coffee and wine bar. In addition, there's a fitness center with modern equipment, an outdoor sun deck, and an indoor sauna with plenty of fresh towels.
For accommodations, rooms have everything you need for a short stay, including a desk, reading chair, television, mini bar, and clean, modern bathroom complete with our favorite Malin + Goetz bath products.
Another plus for a stay at Le Meridien is free access to the Schirn Museum saving you about €14 euros or $15 dollars each. Overall, Le Meridien provides exceptional value and is a solid choice for the gay traveler in Frankfurt.
If you prefer to stay in the heart of Frankfurt's gay village, we highly recommend the fabulous Westin Grand. Like Le Meridien, the Westin brand is part of the gay-friendly Marriott Bonvoy portfolio of hotels, so you can rest assured your pink dollar is being well spent! In addition to the close proximity of the gay bars, the main shopping street and rainbow roundabout are just steps away.
In terms of amenities, the hotel has a stunning indoor pool, spacious restaurant, and tapas bar for cocktails and nibbles. There's even piano in the lobby available for anyone to play. For accommodations, the Westin Grand offers numerous choices from deluxe rooms to suites. The hotel is also pet-friendly which we love.
Centrally located less than a 10-minute walk from the Westin Grand, the Moxy Frankfurt City Center is another great option for the LGBTQ+ traveler. We include them on our list as they often host drag shows and promote themselves as a gay-friendly venue to both locals and visitors.
Where to eat and drink – For the perfect start to the day, take the tram to Harvey's or Sunny Side Up in Nordend for breakfast. Both are gay-friendly and have rainbow flags on the door confirming their welcoming stance. At Sunny Side Up, we particularly enjoy their strong coffee, açaí bowl, and pancakes with fresh fruit. The pancakes are so fluffy and the pistachio mousse is a nice surprise.
For lunch, centrally located Kleinmarkthalle is a must. This fantastic food hall is popular with locals and tourists, and it offers both stand-up and sit-down options in addition to takeaway. On the main level, Tel Aviv street food is noteworthy as is the sit-down Italian restaurant upstairs. We came here two days in a row as it's that good!
Before a night on the town, we highly recommend local restaurant Buchholz near Merianplatz. Serving German and Austrian cuisine with regional wine and beer, this cozy venue has some of the best schnitzels in Frankfurt. For dessert, don't miss the famous Kaiserschmarm with apple puree and vanilla ice cream.
Where to find gay nightlife – Many of Frankfurt's best gay bars and clubs are located in the gay village centered around Alte Gasse. This is also where you'll find the rainbow top or roundabout. Locals affectionately call this area the "Bermuda Triangle," as bars are in close proximity to one another and open late if they close at all. Many travelers are known to disappear here for long stretches of time hence the nickname.
For one of the oldest gay bars in Frankfurt, Lucky's has a relaxed vibe and friendly, welcoming bartender. It's a great place to begin your night out in Frankfurt and make new friends. Karaoke is popular during the week as is the monthly bear party. For upcoming gay and fetish themed events across Frankfurt, check the countless fliers in the bathroom.
Just down the street and around the corner from Lucky's, you will find three of the best gay bars in Frankfurt: Bar Central and Tangerine are right next door to each other and Pink is just a few steps away. We found a sociable international crowd at Tangerine, so we would make this gay venue your next stop after Lucky's.
To end the night, Comeback Bar & Lounge is definitely the most cruisy. We heard it's hit or miss, but we'll let you be the judge! It's only a few blocks away from the other gay bars, so it's worth popping in for a beer to see for yourself.
When to go - Summer is without a doubt the best time to visit Frankfurt to enjoy the countless outdoor events and festivals. In August, Frankfurt Pride or Christopher Street Day (CSC) as it's known locally, and the Museum Embankment Festival are two hugely popular events with the LGBTQ+ community. During the holidays, don't miss the famous Christmas Markets held in the historic market square of Römerberg. If you prefer the shoulder season with less tourists and lower prices, April and May as well as September and October can also be quite appealing. For many LGBTQ+ travelers, you will likely be coming to Frankfurt for business, a trade fair, or perhaps stuck on a long layover, but don't worry. We have you covered. Read on for where to stay, eat, and drink in Frankfurt!
How to get here – Frankfurt Airport (airport code: FRA) is one of the busiest and well-connected airports in Europe. Alternatively, train travel to Frankfurt Central Station is available from many major cities across Germany and Europe.
We also love the glamorous old school flight departure boards here. Totally iconic. The airport is also easy to navigate with helpful signs everywhere to find your way to airport hotels, the car rental center, or the train station to access the city center in less than 25-minutes.
Directly connected to Terminal 1, the Frankfurt Airport Marriott and the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport are two highly rated hotels. Both have spacious rooms, top notch amenities like 24/7 gyms, and numerous restaurants and bars at each property.

After meeting in San Francisco in 2018 and later moving to Chicago, we decided to quit our jobs in 2021, sell everything, and become Two Gay Expats. For over two years, we explored the best of gay Mexico while waiting for our house, Casa Cangrejo, to be completed in Tulum. We got married at The Beach Tulum in 2020 and became Mexican permanent residents in 2022.
